Orgcom in Sports

I was reading this book called "Body Check", it is actually a romance novel, and it gave me an idea for a blog post. The book's main character was PR practitioner for hockey team in the NFL. It made me realized that professional sports team do need Orgcom as well. I'm a big fan of sports so it practically amzes me how I can connect the two fields.

Here are some reasons that Orgcom can be useful in Sports organizations:
  • the team should have a good reputation - its is your job to maintain this, because reputation will dictates the team's likability and that will generate ticket sales. You should be able to frame the message that these players a good people in the community. That is why we see teams involving in commuity relations. They are good models in the society.
  • handle issues, esp. if it involves the players. - a bad issue might ruins a players career or might ruin completely a team's morale. Example is the Kobe Bryant issue.
  • controlling reporters - it is part of an orgcom practitioner to know which information to feed to reporters. Example injury reports, strategies, by not giving too much away to the opponent. It involves writing the feed articles, looking for magazine features, etc...
  • Teamwork and communication is needed in the team to win games. So you have to make sure that there is good communication within the team. A coach can be an orgcom practioner in a way because it is his job to make this happen. Examples to solve this issue is team building, player's meeting or sometimes players are paired up to be roommates, etc...

How Technology made our life easier yet more complicated

The other day, I don't have internet connection at home. It was like hell. I felt uneasy all the time, like there is something missing for that day. I know I won't be needing the internet to finish the paper I'm writing, yet I really felt bad. Then a question run through my mind... how did others manage to survive and live with out using the internet before, imagine no Google? or imagine 20 years ago there are no cell phones or dvds or laptops, yet people were able to live.

Technology have really changed the world. It has become part of our everyday life. Once we started using it, we can never go back on where we are from before. It has changed the way we communicate, it has change all our lifestyle. It actually made an orgcom's life easier, yet still more complicated.

There are a lot more media we can use to communicate now. Imagine before as a practitioner, you have limited media to use, like it will be most likely bulletin boards, or printed newsletters, memo, etc... But with technology, you have now have the option to consider websites, emails, group text messages, etc... on top of the old classic way to communicate. So it might it easier to reach people, yet you have a lot more things to consider.

It has change how people in the organization communicate, because of that many organization's structure have change. It is easier to manage a global enterprise, you can work with people from across the world at the same real time. Everything will be within our finger's reach. It made our life easier but made things more complicated We now see a lot of global enterprises, we see a lot of BPOs, we see the same brands everywhere we go, it is like the world is becoming one.

We have now easy access to a lot of information, yet it becomes complicated on choosing what information we are going to use. Technology made things easy for us, yet it have manage to make things complicated. It made us into a more rational being since it requires us to think more of the content, rather than the process.

Shattering the Glass Ceiling of the World.

This glass has not been shattered in most part of the world, and I still believe in that. The US presidential election is one factor that we can take a look to show that this is indeed not broken. We didn't see Hillary Clinton win the primaries over Obama. Nor did we see Sarah Palin become the VP of the country. Everybody was criticizing Palin for being a poor running mate for McCain and maybe a reason for his poor performance. But what I saw is the invincible glass ceiling still up there despite the US being a liberal country who they say treat their woman equally. One of them of winning, might change a lot of things for woman all over the world.

For an organization to shatter this glass, they should have a strong FEMALE leader. Having 2 strong female leaders in our country namely GMA and CORY, have a great impact in our society, amybe helped shatter it a bit. Our top companies here in the Philippines are run by Female, to name a few Tessie Coson is the chairman of BDO and handles SM, Robina Gokongwei of Universal Robina, and many more. We can see a few senators (Pia Cayetano, Loren Legarda, Meriam Santiago), congressman, mayors, who are female

In our own company, my mom is the leader. And because she is a strong woman, it is clearly visible, that the company is dominated by woman. Everybody is treated equally, but the females have been performing better, because they know there is equal opportunity for them within the company. If a female can be a leader, it encourages other female to the same.

The link between Communication and Finance

I am an Organizational Communication and Management of Financial Institutions major student. It is a big question for everyone on how is the two course related. But here is a list on how they are related:
  1. Every organization needs a communication specialist - so obviously financial institutions like banks, insurance companies needs a communication specialist within the organization.
  2. Banks need training videos, manuals, etc... - Orgcom people can do this for them. I have seen a thesis where they made a training video for RCBC.
  3. Image is very essential to banks, and they need to have good PR to help them maintain this image.
  4. Trust is the foundation of every bank, one wrong move will ruin them - they will need a crisis manager to maintain the trust of the clients in them
  5. Orgcom People also have money - they do need bankers, portfolio managers, etc... to help them manage their funds

One good example this illustrate this is the current financial turmoil right now. An example of an organization who badly needs some orgcom practitioner is AIG (American International Group).

They are US's biggest insurer, and own a lot of different insurance companies in the world like Philam Life for the Philippines. They are currently facing a big crisis because of the down economy, due to this, they needed the help of the US government to bail them out from bankruptcy. They have been lent by the US gov't 65 Billion $. This is the big issue. However after the said bailout, news reported that they have spend 300,000$ to celebrate which draw a lot more criticisms. This is not yet over.

The organization is facing a big big crisis. They now need a communication plan to fix this big issue their facing. Trust is the main asset of an insurance company. There are a lot of issues: How will they be able to save their face amidst everything? How will they stop policy holders from withrawing? How will they entice investors to lend them? How will they implement the changes within? These are just a few questions they are facing, and I believe a person with both an Orgcom background and a MFI will help them come up with the best possible solution.

Why orgcom practitioners are important?

Before I went to college, I don't really know what Orgcom is. I don't even know there is such a thing as an Orgcom practitioner. Orgcom for me is just another course I have to take to compliment my course in Finance. But now I learn to appreciate Orgcom. I can easily say, that everywhere you go, any organization needs an Orgcom Practitioner.

Communication is vital in every organization, as a practitioner, its your task to maintain the smooth flow of messages within. Giving the right messages to the correct people internally, building an image and idea about the company externally. You are tasked to handle different issues and how to address them to your publics. As a practitioner you are equipt to handle all these, we are given theories to help us handle issues, but we are also immerse to the practical side and application of these theories. We know how to handle different media, from writing, verbal skills, photography, websites, videos, etc... that we use in dealing with these.

Orgcom is important because it is very practical. Many people will not recognize it as an Orgcom, but as a practitioner you will easily say that is part of Orgcom. When I'm in my commerce class, I can't help but smile and say.. Oh I learned that in Orgcom. Example, in Busorga classes or Business Strategy and Policy class, they will teach you regarding mision vision statements, organizational structure, information management system, organizational culture, etc... what people fail to recognized is that those are part of an orgcom practitioners job. Those things are important in every organization.

I'll give my brother as an example of an Orgcom practitioner. He is an OrgCom and Business Management graduate of La Salle and he now works for our own company. He was asked to help out there without a definite position. Almost 1 year in the company, he have already built a website for the company, made a mission vision, identity manual, operations manual, etc... His next project will be building a training program for employees. These are mostly OrgCom stuff. These are things that commonly entrepreneurs failed to have and recognize. He said we learn these are important in our management classes, but what we failed to recognize, is the person who does these things for us. That is why an orgcom practioner is important because he will be able to do a lot of these things for you. That is another reason why I'm in orgcom, because my Mother sees the importance of it, the same way as my younger sister will be taking up Orgcom next year.

You can be part of many functions in a business organization, you can be part of HR where you handle giving out messages internally, making training videos, etc.... Under marketing, you can be part of the PR team, building the company's image, selling the product. Part of the Operations, where you will handle the flow of information. But technically, an orgcom practitioner should have its own function and team within the organization. There are a lot of things you can do.

Right now, there is still a few organization who recognizes orgcom practitioners, but hopefully as the world becomes more complex, OrgCom will be a must for every organization.
